Low-Mintage 1884-S Morgan Silver Dollar
For the first five years of the Morgan Silver Dollar series, millions of coins rolled off the presses at the San Francisco Mint. But after 1882, those mintages dropped sharply. In 1884, for example, the San Francisco Mint struck just 3.2 million Morgans. Compare that to the output at the New Orleans Mint, which struck 9.73 million Morgans that same year. Or the “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia, which struck 14 million Morgans in 1884!
Now consider that as few as 15% of all Morgans struck still exist, and it’s clear to see why the A Guide Book of United States Coins 2020 edition — the so-called “Red Book” — lists a value of an 1884-S Morgan in Uncirculated Mint State-60 (MS60) condition as $7,800, with a Choice Uncirculated MS64 specimen listing at $130,000! That’s why we’re pleased to bring you this example in Extremely Fine (XF) condition. It’s a great way to secure this date without breaking the bank!
